Advanced students explore creative ways of art-making on alternative surfaces, practicing unconventional techniques, getting inspired by live flowers, household objects, colorful desserts, even painting still-life setup in a landscape outdoors. Major breakthrough will come from observing what is in front of you. You can paint or draw still life in any class.

By how well you can render the human form your skill is defined. To attain this skill, you will explore the many ways of painting and drawing a person, spending two or more weeks on each reality-based project. You will study basic and advanced approaches to figure drawing and painting, learn to describe the body under clothing, mix flesh-tone colors in the light or in the shadow, render the face and capture the likeness. Work from live models, either male and female. Appropriate for the students enrolled in Beginner Courses and Advanced Courses alike.

Student testimonials:

  • This is what I was looking for: a great combination of fun, psychology, techniques, art history, and studio practice with a lot of personal help; what I didn't expect was that I'd start seeing everything, including my own art, differently: now I have greater appreciation of the old masters and contemporary art, especially Picasso!  -Johanna
  • I initially chose LAC for their flexibility, but lately I find myself adjusting my plans so I can attend classes more frequently. Otherwise it feels like something’s missing in my life!   - Robert
  • I travel a lot for work and for me being able to come to class when I can and work on my projects is great. And thank you, Olya, for explaining that trick with trompe l'oeil! - Stephen
  • This studio is a cool professional art studio. Here I feel like an artist, not a student. - Jim, Junior in High-School
